Throw a brick to get jasper.

Interpretation:

Give away everything you don't need,
To lure out something valuable.
After all, even a small gift
Will help you win.

There are many ways to make a profitable exchange, but the best way is to pass off the counterfeit as the real thing, creating the illusion of the desired object. Attracting the enemy by leaving him food supplies and unnecessary land means exchanging cheap for expensive.

Historical example:

A man named Jiang Ziya moved to live on the banks of the Wei River, which was under the rule of Ji Chang of the Zhou kingdom. He knew that the ruler needed intelligent advisers and wanted to enter his service.

Jiang Ziya wanted to attract the ruler's attention. Every day he comes to the river and starts fishing. But he did it in a very unusual way. With the words “A fish that is tired of living must grab the hook itself,” he raised the fishing rod high into the sky. Moreover, the hook was not bent, but straight and without any bait. This fisherman made passers-by laugh, so they began to talk about him in the city.

Soon Ji Chang learned about this strange fisherman. He sent a warrior with orders to bring him to the court. But Jiang Ziya did not pay attention to the warrior, he only said with a mysterious smile on his face:
− Hook! Hook! Hook! However, instead of fish, only small shrimp misbehave.

The warrior returned and reported on the fisherman's actions. Ji Chang came to the conclusion that this fisherman is an eccentric, but outstanding person. Then he sent an official to the river. History repeated itself with him.

Ji Chang collected valuable gifts and went to the fisherman himself to invite him to the court for a conversation. Then Jiang Ziya saw that the ruler was sincerely striving to find a wise and skillful adviser. He entered the service of the ruler of Zhou and became one of his main advisers.
